We’re at Newlab
We recently joined Newlab in Detroit. I had a great time today getting my second tour of the facility and setting up our small scale wireless power (WPT) demonstration in the common areas.
For those of you that have not seen this beautiful facility, it is located next to the Michigan Central Train Station [1]. It was designed by Albert Kahn and completed in 1936. It started life as a post office and was sold to the city of Detroit in 1961 to become the Detroit Public Schools Book Depository [2]. After a fire in 1987 is was abandoned and left to rot.
It is a testament to the faith the designers had in the future. This building was used for 50 years then withstood 30 years of neglect and abuse to be reborn as part of Ford Motor Company's Michigan Central Innovation District.
In April this year, the building reopened as Newlab at Michigan Central. In addition to offices, it includes facilities for metal work, wood work, electronics, and hosting events. It includes workspace big enough for some of the largest vehicles. The view from the roof across the Detroit River to Windsor is beautiful even on a cold, dreary day.
We're happy to be welcomed to this phenomenal facility and look forward to taking advantage of it to push forward with the development of space based solar power.
